Chebika Oasis

NatureHeritage

Mountain oasis near the Algerian border with two waterfalls, palm-shaded pools and the ruins of an old Berber village. It's what I always pictured an oasis to be. Hike to the viewpoint, try fresh palm juice, and look out for traditional mutabbaq flatbread made by a local woman. (via Zay Explores vlog)

Sidi Bou Said

HeritageTourist attractionFood

Clifftop village of blue-and-white houses overlooking the Mediterranean. Felt more like Santorini than Santorini. Join the queue for bambalouni, a hot Tunisian doughnut that was as light as a cloud, then head to a rooftop for sunset. (via Zay Explores vlog)

Star Wars set (Mos Espa / Ong Jemel)

Tourist attractionNature

Desert film set near Tozeur where Star Wars was shot, reached along a road built specially for the film. I hadn't even seen Star Wars but enjoyed the otherworldly landscape, and nearby canyon walks. (via Zay Explores vlog)

Chott el Djerid

NatureTourist attraction

North Africa's largest salt lake: a vast, otherworldly white flat in southern Tunisia. I reached it on a group road trip from Tunis that left at 4am, and camped nearby in simple huts (bring layers, as there's no heating). (via Zay Explores vlog)

Carthage, TunisiaWorth it

Archaeological Site of Carthage

HeritageTourist attraction

Ruins of the once-powerful Phoenician and Roman city, including temples and the Antonine Baths, with views over the Mediterranean. One 12-dinar ticket covers nine sections. The sites close at 5pm, so start early, so I only made it to two.

La Marsa, TunisiaWorth it

La Marsa Beach

NatureFoodSocial venue

Seaside suburb of Tunis with a beachfront lined with cafés and restaurants. I loved the energy even in winter, with people relaxing by the water. The sea is cold out of season, but the weather was pleasant. (via Zay Explores vlog)

Medina of Tunis

HeritageFoodShopping

UNESCO-listed old city that I explored with a local guide. The Zitouna Mosque (the medina's largest), centuries-old cafés, a 200-year-old family leather-shoe workshop, hand-painted old palaces and a rooftop café with 360° views. Try lablabi, a spicy chickpea soup over bread, plus Tunis biscuit bread and grilled chicken. Tunisian food is spicy. (via Zay Explores vlog)

Great Mosque of Kairouan

HeritageTourist attraction

Over 1,300 years old and one of the oldest mosques in the world, often described as the fourth holiest site in Islam. I took an easy hour-long bus from Sousse that drops you in the medina, then got happily lost in its maze. A rooftop opposite the mosque gives a great view from above. Dress modestly. Medina of Sousse

HeritageFoodShoppingSolo-friendly

UNESCO-listed old town with lively streets and markets. Stopped for sweet mint tea with pine nuts at a 160-year-old family-run café, and loved a Tunisian chapati filled with tuna, cheese and egg. I met lots of locals and other travellers here, which made a big difference travelling solo. (via Zay Explores vlog)

Amphitheatre of El Jem

HeritageTourist attractionSolo-friendly

3rd-century Roman amphitheatre that once held 35,000 spectators, and a UNESCO site. It's better preserved than the Colosseum in Rome in my opinion. You can still climb the stairs and explore the underground tunnels. It was a backdrop for Gladiator. The El Jem Museum, with Roman mosaics, is a short walk away. (via Zay Explores vlog)
